Exhibition “La Marseillaise”

First conceived as a war song for the Army of the Rhine in Strasbourg in 1792 before becoming the French national anthem in 1879, La Marseillaise is a revolutionary song that has had several posterities. This exhibition, presented successively in Marseille, Vizille and Strasbourg, explores the subject in a broad and multidisciplinary dimension, crossing the registers of history, musicology and visual arts from the end of the 18th century to the present day.

Co-produced by the Musée d’histoire de Marseille, the Musée de la Révolution française in Vizille and the Musée Historique de la Ville de Strasbourg, this exhibition examines the multiple roles of this song, which resonates when the fatherland or human rights are in danger. The exhibition is organised around three main themes: the year in which La Marseillaise was composed (1792), its dissemination as a war song, a revolutionary refrain and a national anthem, and its role in heritage in France and abroad.
